Happy National Grandparents Day! There can be such a special relationship between a grandparent and a child. We gathered up a list of our favorite picture books that feature loving grandparents.
Disclosure: I received free advance copies of some of these books from the publishers for review. This post may contain Amazon affiliate links. I receive a very small commission if you purchase something through an affiliate link.
How to Babysit a Grandpa and How to Babysit a Grandma by Jean Reagan
These two are probably my kids’ favorites and most read of the list. They are such cute stories and make great gifts to grandparents so they can read them aloud with their grandkids.
Ladybug Girl’s Day Out With Grandpa by David Soman and Jacky Davis
My daughter loves the Ladybug Girl books and this one is a sweet addition about Ladybug Girl visiting a museum with her grandpa and being so excited to see everything that she forgets to slow down and enjoy everything.
The Lines on Nana’s Face by Simona Ciraolo
In this sweet story a granddaughter asks about the lines on her grandma’s face and hears about the memories that filled her face and life.
The Remember Balloons by Jessie Oliveros
This is probably my favorite of the list. The balloons are such a beautiful metaphor for memories and it makes me emotional every time I read about the grandpa losing his balloons and the solution the boy reaches. The illustrations match the story perfectly and this is a must-read for anyone who has a loved one experiencing memory loss.
When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree by Jamie L.B. Deenihan
Through adorable illustrations and child friendly text this one shows how a gift that at first is very disappointing to the little girl leads to greater satisfaction.
The Magician’s Secret by Zachary Hyman
A grandson learns the power of imagination through his grandpa’s creative stories. I love the illustrations and depictions of imagination in this one!
Grandma’s Purse by Vanessa Brantley-Newton
Grandmas always have such treasures in their purse and this one highlights the grandma’s relationship with her granddaughter as they go through the purse together.
Around the Table That Grandad Built by Melanie Heuiser Hill
Following the style of “This is the House Jack Built” this one shows a family gathering together for a meal and all of the contributions they have all made. Also great for my list of Thanksgiving picture books.
Llama Llama Gram and Grandpa by Anne Dewdney
Llama llama is staying at his grandparents house and forgot his special toy! This is another favorite of my daughter’s.
My Grandma and Me by Mina Javaherbin
A beautiful depiction of the author’s memories of growing up in Iran and the moments that made up her tender relationship with her grandma. I love the cozy feel and rich culture evoked in this one.
The Greatest Adventure by Tony Piedra
This story has a sweet grandparent relationship, an encouragement for imagination, some nautical adventures, and beautiful illustrations. Full review and more pictures here: Review of The Greatest Adventure.
