Letter of the Week Y Lesson

Letter of the Week Y Lesson

This lesson is part of a weekly series of home preschool lessons I do for 2 and 3 year olds.  Click to see How I do Letter of the Week lessons we’ve done.

Usually I have my lesson based largely around one subject (T is for Train, W is for Worm, etc) but I didn’t have one subject for letter Y that I felt would fill the entire time, so I combined several for this one.

Y is for Yarn, Yummy/Yucky, Yawn, and Yellow!

We always start our lessons by watching the clip from the Leapfrog Letter Factory DVD for the featured letter and then making a letter craft.

Our letter craft was pieces of cut up yarn glued to a letter Y.  The kids had a harder time when the glue started sticking on their fingers and the yarn so I had to help them out a little.

The first book we read was Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett

It’s about a girl who finds a box of yarn and makes sweaters for everyone around her and somehow always ends up with some extra yarn.

Next we did some worksheet activities:

Y writing practice

Find the letter Ys do a dot sheet

Dot the Y and Yarn

After the Yarn activities we did a tape resist painting of a Y with yellow paint.

I used painter tape to form a Y on the paper and then they painted the entire thing yellow.

After the paint dried I carefully peeled off the tape and they had their Y surrounded by yellow!

To talk about Y is for Yummy and Yucky we first read this board book that my kids love:

Yummy Yucky by Leslie Patricelli is a simple but fun board book that goes through things that the baby says are either yummy (like sandwiches) or yucky (like sand).

Afterward we watched the Youtube video song “Do you like Broccoli Ice Cream?” and “Do You Like Lasagna Milkshakes?”  The songs talk about whether you like certain foods and a combination of the foods and then has “Yucky!” come up on the screen.

Next we did  a taste test of yummy/yucky things.   I put a food on their plate to try and after they ate it they held up either a yummy or yucky sign to show what they thought of the food.  Having the yummy sign be green and the yucky sign be red made it easier for them to distinguish which one to hold up.  I got the idea for this activity from here.

It was a fun activity and gave them the experience of trying new things.

Afterward the kids played with playdough and made Y’s out of it.

Then we read these two books about yawning and tried not to yawn too much ourselves!

“No More Yawning!” by Paeony Lewis

The Yawn Heard ‘Round the World by Scott Thomas

We sang the song “Shake Your Sillies Out” while doing all the actions, with emphasis on yawn verse:

I’ve gotta shake, shake, shake my sillies out,
Shake, shake, shake my sillies out,
Shake, shake, shake my sillies out,
And wiggle my waggles away!

I’ve gotta clap, clap, clap my crazies out,
Clap, clap, clap my crazies out,
Clap, clap, clap my crazies out,
And wiggle my waggles away!

I’ve gotta jump, jump, jump my jiggles out,
Jump, jump, jump my jiggles out,
Jump, jump, jump my jiggles out,
And wiggle my waggles away!

I’ve gotta yawn, yawn, yawn my sleepies out,
Yawn, yawn, yawn my sleepies out,
Yawn, yawn, yawn my sleepies out,

And wiggle my waggles away!

We always end the lesson with reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and adding the letter to our coconut tree.
